Tips for making a better music video from No Film School

Watching this in the the lesson allowed us to come up with techniques to achieve an A* grade.
We watched snippets from the maker of stranger things and 13 reasons why and gain an understanding of how the following can improve our work:
  1. Control of the camera and the way in which, Panning, tilting, focus pulls, and zooming and how the are used to creating meaning
  2. Length of shot duration and in a music video it is fine to play around with the same shot. Featuring it once in slow motion and then repeating it again as a quick cut. Repetition of shots is excepted in a music video as long as the edit is different. If the music video is slow pace it is fine for a shot to go on for 10 seconds, as long as there is variety in the camera movement. For example, it pans, tilts and tracks.
  3. Lighting is also key for creating meaning- as we see in stranger things a dark subject matter e.g. sci-fi when lit in a certain way can set a mood or a tone. E.g pop would have bright lighting.
  4. Movement of a character when they are running, it is best to film them from the left hand side as they are moving to the right
  5. Jump cuts

This video can influence our music video because of the creative shots been given to us. For example, match cuts. This shot can be demonstrated in our music video with the close up action of the ex girlfriend getting revenge, which then cuts to the boyfriend receiving the revenge with his consequence. This shot will improve our music video as it will look more professional and creative. This can be a substitute to an over the shoulder shot, allowing more angles and there more choice of shots and therefore more things to cut to when we are editing. Overall this will enable us to have a more professional product.
