- Shows us the main characters
- Tells us the era that it is set in
- When it is set
- Reveals the genre
- The title
- The narrative
- Actors name
- Understanding of the tone/ atmosphere of the film
Discrete title sequence:
This is a mini film to help get the audience in the mood by revealing snippets- sense of genre and tone but not enough to show us what it is about. An example of this is the film
The girl with a dragon tattoo:
- Black and grey colours
- Lots of ink merges to emphasise the tattoos and metaphorical of revealing information of the narrative
- girl, restrained/ held back from being free
- An urban tattooed girl- current, fast rock music
- The fast rock music showing the film is fast paced and action is involved
- Identify of the girls face is hidden which signifies mystery
- The face of the male actor is shown
- Keyboard and wires link to genre and narrative- hacking and surveillance involved
- Chance of love then faces destroyed
The Traditional title sequence:
- Introduces you to the main characters
- Clear sense of genre
- Areal camera angle- which establishes location
- The tone of the film is shown
- The font is genre specific- the font has a sense of late 1980's
- Example of this is the film 'Drive'
Straight into the film:
- There are no titles at all and the film starts directly with the action of the opening scene
- This type if title sequence is far less commonplace and is more likely to be seen in action or horror, which creates mystery
- An example of this is the film Scream
The stylised opening sequence:
- This is a combination of straight into it and discrete.
- An example of this is James Bond in the film Sky fall
My favourite type of title sequence is traditional because it gives the audience a clear understanding of what we are about to watch.
Gone Girl
- This is straight into the film title sequence
- Shows husbands thoughts towards his wife gone missing then the locations within the town that they live
- The husbands dialogue is followed by the wife's disappeared
- The camera focuses on different places in the town to look as if the camera is looking for her- showing mystery and a theme of thriller
