3 point lighting

When filming anththing such as an opening sequence, film or in a theatre it is impotant to iclude the 3 pount lighting becasue it adds dimension to what is being demonstared to the viewers. This is because this technique has an aim to create illusions  of a three- dimensional subject, such as a person in a two dimensional image. So in order to achieve this the lighting and shows will accomplish this, whilst using the 3 point.

THE KEY LIGHT:
This is the man light which will be used on your object as it is the most dominant light, which will be bright on bright on one side and then have a shaow appearing on the other side. It is the main source of light for example, outsaide the key light will be the sun, however inside there will be a bright source which will act like a key light.

THE FILL LIGHT:
The purpose of this light is to fill in the showss which is created by the key light and therefore this prevents the person from getting too dark. However, the fill light should not create a second shadow and if there iw the fill light is too powerful and should be reduced

THE BACK LIGHT:
This is used to sepearte the subject from the background

  • Scrims are designed to reduce the light without softening it
  • Neural density gels are to reduce light
  • You do not have to use a sepearte light as a fill light

A refelctor will bounce light from one place to another for example the refelctor could be the fill light and will reflect light from the key light onto the subject to remove the shadow. Therefore we know that not all three lights are required in this technique

An example where good lighting is shown is in the film Kill Bill. For example when the girl is in the grave, bright lighting is shown through such as the torch which is acting as a soruce of light.
