2 levels of analysis:
- Denotation: to discuss a text at a denotative level you describe what you see
- Connotation: after this you discuss what these elements may mean or signify what it represents.
Sherlock Holmes:
It is clear that the two men are important due to the brightness on their faces. Also because everything is behind them, which shows that they have power and status. Holmes is at the front, with a cheeky face. The man in the back is darker compared to the other two, and is also more faded away implying a bad character in the film. As viewers we can also identify that he is an enemy because of the nasty look on his face and his body position. Within this poster there is newspaper, which symbolises mystery along with crime. The metal (ion) and the type of blue gives a setting of prison like and emphasis the cold atmosphere that is being portrayed. This also gives an old fashioned effect implying the time it is being based on. The idea of this being old fashioned is given away by the lamp post, which is not seen as very modern and it also shows his address.
Run Lola Run:

Straight away the first thing that catches my eye is the colour red, which illustrates that danger is involved. The background isn't in focus, considering she is running at a fast speed, which therefore implies that there is something unknown behind her. There is also a visual tattoo, which has connotations of being rebellious and therefore presenting to viewers that she is not innocent. Moreover, the light blue identifies to us that she us running on s road, which indicates the setting is based in an urban setting (Berlin). Also, the repetition of the word run shows that she is in more than one problem. The expression on her pale face shows determination and it looks as if she is running to something and not away from something.
High Heels:
The colour pink shows a feminine side to the film, however the black juxtaposes this implying a dangerous story that is involved. As well as this, the gun implies danger and crime that is going to be evoked throughout; this immediately tells us the genre of the film (thriller). The light on the tights has been purposely done to show the net tights, which implies prostitution. From the poster it is clear that the gun is being hidden within the heel which shows secrecy. Secrecy is also being shown because no face is just being shown, just shoes and some leg.Pulp fiction:
The state of this poster is really recognisable, it has been made to deliberately look trade on the edges. The 10 cents tell us this was around in the 40-50's, involving gangsters, violence and low rent. This was a time when advertisement would be sold at airports. It is evident that the gun is symbolising violence. The women's outfit implies to viewers that she is sexual with her low cut top, which has been done on purpose. Additionally, she is resting her hand on a book to show off her manicure and therefore implying her wealth, which is provocative. Also, her low cut top, the gun and her eyes and all lined up in order to rap attention.
