- Target audience is rock and country fans through the location which is as music venue. They are an alternative band who are musicians. This is reinforced through the close up of the instruments.
- Emphasis on instrument, to show they are real authentic musicians. The cello enhances the idea that they are organic (real)
- Dutch tilts looking up and the guitar
- Swish pan to show them all on the stage together- they are unified
- Mise-en seen is key as it identifies that they area rock country band to their target audience
- Close ups are used to sell the star image of the band.
- Close up of sweat help sell the idea that they are real and not sold on their looks, instead of a classic boy band. We also know this through their waste coats which a pop band would not wear.
- Target audience would be primarily males over 20 years old.
Promoting Organic and Synthetic Acts:
- There are clear distinct between the ways in which different types of artists are represented to ensure shot term of long term success
- Organic acts are often sold on their 'authenticity', both musically and socially.
- The image of the artists appears 'unconstructed' (although, of course, this is in itself a carefully constructed look)
- Synthetic acts are often sold on their 'look' or personalities
- The image of the artists is carefully and unashamedly constructed.
Synthetic bands:

- One Directions
- JLS
- The wanted
- Take That
- Girls Aloud
- The Saturdays
- Spice Girls
- S Club 7 P
-Often aimed at younger, less sophisticated audiences
- Profits generated by this kind of artist tend to be part of an immediate, short term strategy by the record company. This is because the audience grows up and eventually out grows the artist.
- Executives attempt to consrct successful acts out of the artists and the songs at their disposal
- The image of the artist is often constructed by the record company
- The artists will be given a short time to prove their success before other combinations will be tried out.
Organic Bands:
- They are considered to be more natural
- The seeds of success within the artists, who have to be 'nurtured' by the record company
- The image of the artists is enhanced by the record company
- The artist is given time to evolve and progress though their career. This is because they recognise their fan base will continue to grow and evolve over time.
Analysing how the clash album cover represents them as organic:
- Live performance- playing as a band in a venue
- One of the band members is smashing the guitar shows aggression, signifying that there is something serious about them
- The colours are dark and face is hidden to represent anger, which would not be seen in a synthetic band
- The cables on the floor, adds to the authenticity of them as this is during a live performance.
- Instruments adds to the organic nature of the band
- No face and ripped clothes connotes they are not selling themselves as a boy band
- Live performance setting and the name of the band is small compared to the title- selling themselves for their music and not their name
- Cover also represents the band as part of rock history and organic as it references to Elvis Presley's cover in 1955, where he is also in a live setting playing an instrument.
Synthetic Album cover:
- Bright colours connote something synthetic
- Facial expressions show that she is not serious- her serious face is to sell her looks and image
- The use of stars above her name highlights she is a synthetic pop star as this is drawing her name to the viewers
- Selling herself not the album as her name is bigger than the album's name.
- Her costume is revealing and is not serious. This is to accentuate her body image. Her dress is doll/ princess/ barbie like.
- The bright vibrant colours is synthetic
